September 15, 2007 - Drainage of placental blood after c-section delivery
Leavitt BG, Huff DL, Bell LA, Thurnau GR. Placental drainage of fetal blood at
cesarean delivery and feto maternal transfusion: a randomized controlled trial.

"After the infant was delivered the cord was doubly clamped immediately and
severed, with the pertinent cord blood studies obtained above the most proximal
clamp. The umbilical cord was then cut again above this clamp to permit the
placenta to drain, allowing for the free egress of fetal blood, which was also
promoted through milking of the cord blood into the pocket of the sterile drape."

Fetal circulation continues during transition to pulmonary respiration. The fetal
blood drained into the sterile drape should have been allowed to flow into the baby,
to completely fill the capillaries surrounding the alveoli, and until fetal circulation
ceases, evident when pulsations of the cord cease.
