Development of the polio vaccine by Jonas Salk was one of the most
outstanding achievements of the 1950's, and lead to eradication of this
dreaded disease.
Chlorpromazine was also introduced during this period, but was no more
a cure for schizophrenia than Salvarsan had been for neurosyphilis. If
thirty years seems a long time between discovery of cause and a cure
for dementia paralytica, we are still waiting nearly fifty years after
introduction of chlorpromazine for an understanding of the causes of
schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
