Bradley (1941) described the behaviors of children described as
schizophrenic according to the terminology of Bleuler (1928) and before
Kanner (1943) coined the term autism. Kanner (1943) was the first
paper describing autistic disorder that was present from birth, as
opposed to schizophrenic disorders or dementia infantilis.
Asperger (1944) described the isolative behaviors in children and
referred to this as autistic psychopathology. However, these were
children who had acquired language within the normal time span for
development of speech. Kanner (1946) described the echolalic speech
that is characteristic in children with autism.
Yakovlev et al. (1948) provided case histories of children with Heller’s
syndrome, and compared these with schizophrenia, which normally
becomes manifest in the second or third decade of life.
