Kant (1933) provided more reports of Wernicke's encephalopathy in
brains from those who died from chronic alcohol use.

Neubürger (1937) reported Wernicke's encephalopathy in non-alcoholic
patients who were elderly and suffering from intestinal atrophy; he
suggested abnormal metabolites produced in senile organs might be
toxic to the brain and cause the same pattern of damage caused by
alcohol intoxication.
