Craigie (1938) is a paper reporting investigation of vascularity of the
brain in frogs (Rana Pipiens), the last of a series of papers on
investigations of blood supply to the brain using India ink injections. The
vascular supply was found richest in the dorsal VIII (cochlear) nucleus,
and next in rank the superior olivary nucleus. Craigie noted that these
auditory nuclei are both phylogenetically new in the frog, but he had also
found the richest capillary supply to the cochlear nucleus in the albino
rat (Craigie 1920).
Ariens Kappers et al. (1936) is a textbook of comparative anatomy and
evolution with good descriptions of the evolution of sensory organs in
lower vertebrates for orientation guided by vibrations transmitted through
water and their later development into components of the vestibular and
auditory systems.
