    1 - Kernicterus
2 - Bilirubin and other confounding factors
>>
Lucey et al. found that bilirubin only got into the brain in monkeys previously
subjected to asphyxia.  The blood brain barrier protects the brain from large
molecules like bilirubin in the circulation.  The blood brain barrier becomes
impaired by asphyxia and circulating substances that are directly toxic, like
alcohol and certain antibiotics.
