Inhibitory neurons appear to damp response to persistent sounds in the
environment that are not the focus of attention.  Loss of such inhibition might
result in perception of crescendoing noise that cannot be consciously shut out.
Children who cover their ears in distress may be experiencing such an
intolerable load of noise.  Insights on hyperacusis may be obtained from
research findings on problems such as audiogenic seizures, and the auditory
problems associated with use or abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
